Why we have a code of conduct
We want Birmingham Community Matters (BCM) events to be welcoming, inclusive and friendly, for everyone.
We have written this code of conduct to help you to help us make that happen. Together we will make sure everyone feels safe, welcome and included at our events. This includes our online events.
What we expect from you
We ask everyone – our core team, our volunteer BCM helpers, our trustees, attendees, and staff at our venues – to engage positively with our events.
In every way you can, please help others to engage as well, by:
- Being supportive, welcoming, considerate, respectful and collaborative
- Realising that we all bring different experiences, worldviews and ideas to the event – and that’s a good thing
- Sharing your thoughts and ideas while also listening to the thoughts and ideas of others.
Always be aware that our BCM helpers are volunteers, giving their time for free.
Most of our events take place in community spaces, enjoyed by many people. Help us to look after those places by respecting the surroundings. Leave everything as tidy as you found it.
Ask permission before taking photos or screenshots or recording videos at our events. We like to take photos and videos for social media and to aid future learning, and we will always ask your permission too.
Behaviours we don’t want
It should go without saying, but you must never behave in a way that may cause other people to feel uncomfortable, unwelcome or unsafe at our events.
We cannot tolerate offensive verbal comments relating to gender (including sex), sexual orientation, neurotype, disability, ethnicity, nationality, religion, relationship/family structure or social background.
If you think, or someone tells you, that your behaviour is causing someone else to feel uncomfortable, unwelcome or unsafe, please stop what you are doing. If you persist, you will have to leave.
