Birmingham Community Matters (BCM) is leaving X

Birmingham Community Matters (BCM) is no longer posting on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). We do not want to support a company that has a growing association with hate speech, prejudice and misinformation.

Our decision to leave X has not been straightforward because our own experience of the platform has been positive. This is thanks to our diverse, supportive and upbeat followers across Birmingham. We are proud of the conversations we’ve had, and our own timeline of community celebration.

However, our trustees and core team agree that X as an organisation no longer aligns with BCM’s values.

BCM’s decision on leaving X is no judgement against the charities and other socially conscious organisations that are continuing to use it.

Leaving X: our plan

We will keep our X account active until 1 November 2024, then delete it. Please note: we will not be reposting from now on and we may not see posts you tag us in. We feel we owe it to our funders, the small groups we support, our own small team, and indeed everyone who has experienced hurt or prejudicial treatment through X/Twitter, to invest our time and resources elsewhere.

We are exploring other social media channels to adopt, and we’d love you to follow our established Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn accounts too.

Thank you as always for your support.
