Jobs at BCM! Thanks to funding from the National Lottery Community Fund, Birmingham Community Matters (BCM) is recruiting. We are looking for two people to join our team in April 2023. You could help us to boost the impact of community organisations across Birmingham.
Both roles are flexible, working from home and at community venues around Birmingham.
BCM will provide the equipment you need to carry out your role.
Project Officer
Our new Project Officer will grow our work with small community organisations, initially in the north and west of Birmingham. You will be responsible for the day-to-day delivery of activities.
Briefly, the role will involve:
- Being our first point of contact by phone, email and face-to-face meetings (in person or online) for people with queries about setting up or developing their micro community group or small charity
- Hosting and facilitating online and in-person meetings, events and workshops
- Developing networks and contacts and with host organisations and wider stakeholders for the benefit of the groups we support.

Delivery Support Administrator
The role of Delivery Support Administrator will support our work with small community organisations.
Briefly, the role will involve:
- Providing administrative support to the BCM team for events and meetings, both online and face to face
- Being the first point of contact for enquiries received through BCM’s various channels, always giving a high level of customer service
- Managing requests for one-to-one support, undertaking ‘triage’ interviews with people needing BCM’s support
- Matching individuals with a skilled volunteer (BCM helper) or following up with signposting or information resources.

A note about experience
Please know – you don’t need to fulfil 100 per cent of the job criteria to be a great candidate. The Delivery Support Administrator role in particular would be suitable for someone who is new to working in the third sector but who is interested in the world of community and voluntary organisations.

About Birmingham Community Matters
When setting up, running or growing a small community group, we know it can be hard for people to find the information they need. BCM is a charity, started in 2016, which helps to overcome this problem for groups across Birmingham.
At our events and one-to-one sessions, people can work through questions with our ‘BCM helpers’. These volunteers have lots of experience in running community and voluntary groups.
Things we often support small community organisations with:
- Choosing a suitable structure for their group
- Finding people who share their interests or causes
- Registering as a charity (if applicable)
- Recruiting and looking after volunteers
- Making funding applications (finding funders, identifying the ‘needs’, planning activities, costing projects)
- Establishing policies and procedures
- Managing finances.
Our team and our BCM helpers always end up gaining new knowledge, contacts and experience too. That’s why we call BCM a ‘peer learning network’. Our motto is Everyone has something to learn and everyone has something to teach.
