Jo Burrill, our brilliant Chief Executive, is leaving Birmingham Community Matters on Thursday 1 August. The also brilliant Becky Coley, our current Project Officer, will step into the role of Interim Chief Exective.

About Becky Coley

Becky has been involved in the voluntary sector since 2004, focusing on community outreach, engagement, project management and fundraising. Over the past 20 years, she has delivered numerous projects supporting children, young people and families across Birmingham. She has delivered many impactful intergenerational projects as well as being a successful fundraiser.

Becky’s work includes leading on the ‘Play in Parks initiative and the Commonwealth Community Playdays project. Both of these involved organising community events in parks across Birmingham. She also worked on the National Lottery-funded Building Community Together project. This focuses on fulfilling the aspirations of residents in the Stockfield Estate and the wider Acocks Green area. Becky played a key role in establishing the Birmingham Scrapstore.

Since April 2023, Becky has been working as a Project Officer for BCM, where she continues to be a dedicated advocate for the voluntary sector.

Becky said: “I’m passionate about the voluntary sector, and grassroots groups in Birmingham. in particular. It’s a joy, through BCM, to see groups responding to the changing needs of communities, and to help them grow and sustain their activities. My new position will allow me to continue championing our city’s micro and small community organisations, as BCM expands its reach. I want to thank Jo for helping to secure strong foundations and an exciting future for our relatively young charity.”

Smooth handover

Jo, who is taking up a post within the NHS, said: “It has been a pleasure contributing to the establishment and growth of BCM, supporting small and micro community groups and voluntary activity across Birmingham. I have been lucky to work with a wonderful group of colleagues, trustees, volunteers and partners. I am delighted to leave BCM in a strong position and, with Becky at the helm, I know it will continue to flourish.”

Jo and Becky are currently working closely together to ensure a smooth handover at the beginning of August.
